This was a live brief set by YCN to design Ted Bakers' Autumn Window Display, originally I collaborated with a friend on it and we handed in a design, just on time, if we hadn't of collaborated we wouldn't of been able to hand in on time, as we had 2 weeks from start to finish.
After we handed in, we both decided to go our seperate ways with the rest of our research and experiments. I decided to set myself a brief to make 6 illustrated designs and then to make 3 of them 3D as this is where I believe my talents lie.

After re-reading the original brief I noticed that humour, fun and Britishness were the main focus for the Ted Baker brand.

Ikea Overload Update

I reassessed my Ikea project and realised that it was lacking a bit of punch, it had a hint of a campaign but the message wasnt being portrayed strongly enough, so I decided to make it an official campaign. I already had made a stop animation of the making of my Ikea products to show how easy it was to personalize your environment, however I wanted to incorporate some of the things I had been stating in my sketchbooks, I needed to write up a sort of manifesto or creed of living. So I used the visuals of my personalized products and chunks of writing from my sketchbooks and put them into a little pamphlet to distribute.

I mimicked the visual advertising techniques of Ikea by using my customized Ikea products as posters and by adapting the catalogues and assembly manuals.

Everything you buy at Ikea has an 'Ikea Guarantee' which ranges from 3 years to 30 years, but we all know Ikea furniture lasts a few months before chipping or breaking...so I changed the guarantee sticker to reflect the truth.

Anyone who has ever bought anything from Ikea will have experienced the frustrating and pointless assembly manuals that you get with the item to inform you on how to put it together. I made my own assembly manual to show how to make my personalized candle.

For my degree I have to do the penguin/puffin book cover competition. The penguin book is the frankly disturbing book "Perfume: The story of a murderer" the book explores the sense of smell, and its relationship with the emotional meaning that scents may carry. The Puffin book is the Children's classic "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" where a girl falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy land populated by weird and wonderful characters.

I wanted to cover my sketchbook in a different way, I was sick of the typical black moleskin look and wanted something that tied the appearance of my sketchbook to my project. I bought some African wax print material online and used some old brass buttons I had in my sewing box, I then padded the front and back to really change the shape of the book.

I've been reading a book of essays called "Crime and Ornament" and felt a passionate dislike (some may call it hate) for a certain architect, called Adolf Loos. Who basically said that anyone who enjoys ornament or decoration is a basic minded person. He was disgraced by a pedophilia scandal in 1928 and was known for being incredibly racist, which is always a loveable combo. So i decided to do a series of pieces illustrating quotes from his essay and generally trying to piss him off. He died in 1933 but has many followers, so his views are still being carried on to this day, which I believe to be wrong.

"If I want to eat a piece of gingerbread I will choose one that is completely plain and not a piece which represents a baby in the arms of a horserider!"

"The dishes of the past Centuries which used decoration to make the peacocks, pheasants and lobsters appear more appeatizing produce the opposite effect on me. I eat roast beef."

I also made a very short stop animation to piss him off a little bit more!

Self Initiated: Celebration Decoration

One of my self initiated projects is on promoting everything ornamented! I was looking at Western and Eastern values on decoration and how the more decorative an item is over here the more expensive it is. I think this is a main reason society has a bad attitude towards decoration, because it is overly expensive. I decided to make economically made products for people and children to decorate themselves, therefore creating a starting point for self expresssion through pattern.

I used the shapes of continents around the world as a repeat pattern on duvet covers, pillowcases and wallpaper to reflect the patterns i have discovered from around the world. I filled in Asia and India with patterns from the regions to give buyers an example of how to decorate their items.

Day Trip to Wales...

I havn't updated my blog in 2 months due to working in a bar full time which is rubbish, this doesn't mean I havn't been being creative, oooh contraire!

I visited my Aunt in Chester and took a day trip to Llandudnow pier in North Wales. It was a complete blast from the past and a little strange, yet amazingly untouched and beautiful. We took a cable car over the Welsh hills, it was incredibly windy and grey and I had forgotten my camera so the photos have been taken on my phone, but I really enjoyed my day and felt like it deserved a little post.

I practiced some different embroidery stitches, the centre of the flowers were made by using french knots, the leaves by a technique called fishboning, I also sewed on some pearl beads.
I backed the pillow with a pair of shorts i had, I added a little button aswell.

I contacted an Ebay seller who made me some bespoke boxes, I wanted them just plain cardboard 3x3" and plenty of them. Thankfully he hooked me up nicely so I could concentrate on the aesthetic of the contents. I realised that by making the boxes more neutral they had actually become a little ugly and had lost the love in them, so I decided to pay more attention to the type and processes I used. I letterpressed the labels and used textured papers, to make the boxes a little more interesting.

I re-did my stained glass, because I ballsed the Madonna one up because I wanted to paint the glass so it looks like traditional coloured stained glass, but the glass paint let me down and cracked and generally looked dodgy, and i stepped on the Adam Ant one and smashed it so i have re-leaded them both and made them bigger...

The Placement of the BIG BOX

I've been reading a book called "Inside Britain's new street gangs" by John Heale and he described this area very close to where I live and 2 minutes away from where Esco and Paul Erhanon were killed, it is a junction where a Stratford postcode street sign (E15) stands next to a Leytonstone postcode street sign (E11). There has almost always been gang conflict between Stratford and Leytonstone and this is portrayed subtly and beautifully by these road signs, because the Stratford Road Sign has been graffitti'd so that E15 looks like E11.
I wanted to place my box here in between both of the street signs, almost acting as a peaceful protest linking both postcodes together. I made the box more green and natural looking than the previous tester one I made and hung in my garden, because I wanted the message to be subtle and more beautiful than the previous box I wanted it to look like it had grown there on its own.

We had a weekly workshop on expending our use of materials to make things appear invisible. In my group we looked at how when you remove the function of a very functional object you make it in a way invisible, because you no longer use it. We started wrapping objects in silver foil and cling film, to stop people being able to access certain things and spaces.

I'm making little packages to post around my area, this will include my poem and some forget-me-not seeds aswell as information about the gang crime in the area.
I've been experimenting with the general look of the boxes, I want them to be subtle and beautiful they have to also be small enough to fit through people's letterboxes.

I've decided to write a poem to make people think a little deeper about what is going on around them. I've named this project forget-me-not because I will be incorporating the theme of flowers into the final outcome of this project.
This is what i've come up with...

People call it “Hellstone”,
So hell is where I live,
I hate to say I love it here,
I've been here since a kid.
I'm used to the violence here,
Some say that it ain't right,
It's just another kid they say,
Another knifed in strife,

E11 a twisted heaven,
Imposed upon the bitter and beaten,
The raw and unsweetened,

So blame these faceless young ones,
For something they cant stop,
So when a kid gets shot,

I have a new brief called "Flowers in a Wasteland" i've been exploring invisible youth fatalities, I started to notice that the only reason you know someone has died is the flower tributes left at the scene of the death. They are generally very cheap bunches of flowers from supermarkets or petrol stations. I started to question why people buy these flowers when they won't last and aren't very beautiful, and how this relates to the deceased.

I visited different cemetaries and was shocked by the amounts of cheap dead flowers in the bins, so i wanted to visually respond to them so i made my own mesh box and used bunches of flowers that were all under £2 each and i specifically didn't put them in oasis because i wanted to see exactly how long they last without help, as if they were to be left on a grave...

I recently returned to my Decades project to refresh it a little, after looking at my screen prints it occurred to me that they would be really effective as stained glass templates, so i've started experimenting with different techniques, I want to use the fact that they are transparent in the final piece by putting something behind them, but this is just my work in progress...

I just found some photos on my laptop of an old college project, I did this work in 2006!
It is apparent that I have been obsessed with the innocence of childhood and craft for a long time juxtaposed with malicious content and punk processes.

I read the book 'The Colour Purple" as part of my English A Level. The book is based on diary entries from Celie who is an uneducated young woman who, at fourteen, is raped and impregnated twice by a man she believed to be her father. She gets sold to a man she hates but has to marry, she finds her independence through making her own clothes and makes enough money to free herself from him.

In this piece I wanted to use what I had discovered about the power of stitch so I made a patchwork quilt, each square of material explaining a particular part of my life or character, similar to the pages of Celie's diary. I was tackling the issue of child abuse in this project, and was comparing my happy childhood to those less fortunate. So, I projected ghostly images of me as a child onto the blanket that I had made, this was the final outcome...

My Easter brief is to research the gunfight at O.K. Corral, after extensive research and analysis i discovered that the gunfight was pretty pointless and 3 people died because of hear say (not the awful band, well i wouldn't be surprised). Guns were strictly forbidden in Arizona, where the gunfight took place, there was an amazing lack in law and order and one gang of cowboys decided to take matters into their own hands.
30 shots were fired in 30 seconds and 3 people died.

I've been set a brief to visually combine two decades, I got the 40's and the 80's, I wanted to use processes I wouldn't normally use such as screenprinting and letterpressing. After some initial research I decided to focus on 80's icons and 40's quotes, therefore 80's imagery and 40's typography.

I became pre-occupied with elephants, the 2 main themes in the book are culture and dysfunctional families. The phrase "The Elephant in the room", which literally means the big issues that never get discussed, this interested me because the families in the book have many things they don't discuss which leads to phenomenal problems. Also Elephants originate either from India or Africa, which are the cultures in the book.

I went on a trip to Istanbul with my illustration class and bought some wooden pattern stampers for this project. I created a repeat pattern using acrylic paint on felt.

Common Space Project

I was set a brief to obsess and investigate a place in London that people interact and move through, and to make it into a book, using a page layout template.
I chose Trafalgar Square, its a place in London that I rarely go because I don't find it interesting in the slightest. I set myself a mission to find something beautiful about it.
I spent weeks analysing and documenting the space, I focused on the sky and how the architecture and buildings cut silhouettes into the skyline. I became inspired by how everyone lives under the same sky but no one has the same skyline.
I made my final outcome into a fold out of the skyline. I spray painted with fleck spray onto grey tiles to pick up on the colours and textures of the Square using a different templates I had made from photos I had taken, then printed onto textured paper.

I decided to choose 10 themes within my work;
Family, Nostalgia, Femininity, Handicraft, Childhood, Escapism, Secrets, Time, Temptation, Britishness.

Rather than trying to explain "Who I am" I wanted the viewer to become me just for a moment. To do this I created a complete sensory environment, I wanted to show the viewer "The World in my eyes" , obviously I don't live surrounded by cakes and embroidered doilies, but the whole point of the installation was to blur reality and fantasy, to reflect my urge to escape.
